Start Your Own Travel Writer Biz

Imagine the ultimate job, traveling the globe, staying in luxury hotels, vacation resorts, experiencing the best extreme adventure travel, big game hunts and big game fishing.

That is exactly what you can do when you become a travel writer. There are many resources available listed here you help you achieve that goal.

Let’s start by saying that you can become a freelance travel writer or start your own travel writer business.

Everyone needs to get started somewhere. After being in the travel business for a year now with my own travel booking website and a top 100 syndicated travel blog, I share some of the tips that I have learned to help you achieve your goal of becoming a travel writer.

There are basic steps required to get started as a travel writer.

The requirements to start a business or career in travel writing are pretty basic and I will outline the requirements here.

Like most jobs or career changes you just have to jump off the cliff and start writing. If you are not interested in writing, and writing on a daily basis, then this business or career is not for you.

There are millions of newbie writers on the internet with the creation of blogs. So you can see just how easy it is to become an accomplished writer. Many of these blogs also generate income for their owners by collecting Google Adsense revenue, as an affiliate marketer for many types of businesses.

As you begin to write regularly, and they do not need to be novel length, just simple 400 -1,000 word articles. Once you begin to write, you will be amazed on how easy it is to create a 600 word document in a matter of minutes.

Once you begin writing, you will develop your own unique style of writing and write in your own voice from your perception of the events or experiences of your travels.

What do you do not have the money to begin a travel article? You do just as many other travel article writers do, they begin by doing articles and stories about travel destinations in their own backyards. You can do some initial fact gathering from the internet, local tourism or CVB (Convention and Visitors Bureau) offices.

When I write travel articles for my YTB Travelmore World Travel and Vacations blog, and I do not write them all, as others do contribute, I enjoy the travel that is involvedin writing an actual travel article.

The actual travel allows you to share your experiences with your readers, break down cultural barriers, promote understanding and peace.

There are also several free online resources for travel articles, travel agent magazines, travel stories or vacation ideas. Here are a few are:

 1.Agent@Home

2. Travelweekly

3.Travel Trade Magazine

4. Travel Agent Magazine

The reason for one wanting to become a travel writer is usually for the free travel or reduced travel or travel writer perks involved in being a travel writer.

A travel agent also receives similar perks call FAM (familiarization trips) to help travel agent become familiarized with certain trips, resorts or vacation planning ideas.

I will show you how to combine the privileges of a travel writer and the perks of a travel agent and show you how to start your own Travel Writer Business and start traveling the globe, and writing those trips or vacations off on your taxes.

If your are ready to become a globe trotting travel writer, be prepared to start small as I assume that most of you reading this article do not have travel writer credentials, travel agent credentials or an assignment letter from a major editor or travel magazine. (I will cover more on this later)

The reason for starting small and slow is that certain events must happen before you start to get recognition and demand for your writing style or travel articles.

Some travel articles to consider:
Traveling with kids (always popular)
Kids vacation ideas in your backyard. (popular)
Eco-tourism (new)
Traveling on a budget (popular)
Road trips (always popular)

You can also submit an article for my blog to increase your online presence as a contributing author, besure to include your travel writer bio, with website address and I will also promote your travel writing career. Send your travel article to Brent Vanderstelt.

The first way to get around this issue to start a travel blog, you can get a Blogcast at Russell Domains and start writing and posting your travel articles each and every day. This will develop traffic to your travel booking engine, which allows you to earn travel commissions while you develop your writing style as a travel writer and travel agent credentials. This is a one, two punch for earning a great living as a travel writer and earning travel commissions from your travel store.

When you develop your travel writing blog, you will want to be sure that you syndicate your content by subscribing your blog to Feedburner or RSS (really simple syndication), joining several blog directories and social networking groups such as Digg and Delicious. This will get you almost immediate recognition, but you must write daily at the least to develop a following.

Once you get a following and traffic to your blog, you can start earning travel commissions from articles on your blog, you just insert links or banner advertising to your travel store.

Ok, you are asking, “but where can I get a travel store to sell trips and vacations and earn travel commissions”? The best travel booking engine I found is from a company called YTB (Your travel Biz).  View the YTB Opportunity

How would you like to be able to travel around the world, have plenty of free time and have plenty of money to spend as you do it?

That's precisely what is happening to the lives of thousands of people across the nation with YTB (Your Travel Biz).

With YTB, you can earn a significant income simply by referring people to this website to book their travel and learn about the opportunity. In fact, YTB will guarantee you earn at least $6,000 in your first 12 months if you follow their simple marketing system.

The YTB companies offer two unique and powerful business opportunities, that of referring travel agent or "RTA" and that of independent marketing representative or "REP". The travel agent opportunity has an initial fee under $500 and a monthly license fee of $49.95. There is no fee or travel agency purchase required to be a REP. You may choose to participate in one or both opportunities.

You might be asking the question, “but I do not know how to be a travel agent”. This is not a problem because YTB offers travel agent training from the back office of your travel store. Beside, all you need to do is point people to your travel store and include links from your travel articles to your travel store. I do this daily with my travel blog and travel articles.

Now that you have your travel store to sell trips and vacations, your blog is set up and you are posting regularly, and are earning travel commissions from family, friends, and co-workers and from complete strangers that are visiting and reading your blog articles.

As a legitimate travel business owner and travel writer, you can now “develop” your own travel writer credentials or assignments and begin accepting travel writing assignments and taking travel writing press trips.

A travel writing press trip is a visit arranged by an establishment, public relations firm or local CVB (convention and visitor bureau) to promote a certain area, resort, vacation package or trips.

Travel Businesses and local CVB’s benefit from press trips, media visits or FAM’s (familiarization trips) to gain valuable media attention and FREE PUBLICITY through your editorial.

Your travel writer article can do wonders for promoting destinations, restaurants and resorts by viewing the article from your personal perspective, rather than an advertisement.

You can use your media or travel writer credentials at theme parks, shows and other attraction where a business or group is seeking FREE PUBLICITY from your editorial.

Theme Park tickets cost anywhere from $45.00 each, why not have the them park pick up your tab here also? Here are some a couple of ideas for southern California.

Disney: www.disneylandnews.com

Writer is allowed one complimentary visit for 4, once per year. You as a travel writer must request tickets within 5 days of visit. This site has story ideas, press releases with contact information. You can request tickets for Disneyland and California Adventure.

 Knotts Berry Farm: www.knotts.com/media/index.shtml

Knott’s has a wealth of information for the travel writer or media, such as press releases, media trip guides and contact information. If you plan a trip with any media equipment, other than your trusty pen and pad of paper, you will be escorted by a public relations person. You are allowed visits Sunday-Friday, only.

While on your travel writing assignment, make sure to take lots of high quality, high resolutions photos that include with your travel article, blog and other media outlets. Many places will pay you for your pictures, not you are developing multiple streams of travel income.
